THE REALITY OF HOUSING

March 4, 2025

A few months ago my mother decided that she would  finally look into affordable housing for seniors.  Most of her searches would lead her on various waiting lists which could take months and even years before she saw an available place.  The good news is she has finally come to realize that she needs to start taking action now since it is getting harder and harder to stay afloat with the cost of living and rent.

I offered to take her a few places.

Fast forward to this month she received a call, to fill out an application to look at a place. After discovering what the rent would be as well as how far it would be from her doctors, social center and myself she decided not to pursue.  Even with assistance, the cost wouldn't be worth the move.

I’ve noticed her apartment has picked up that annoying ash tray smell.  I’m back to taking a shower after coming back from my mom’s because the cigarette smell lingers on me until I wash it off.

She claims she only does it every so often. But I know better.

She was doing so well. She had gone at least four to five months without. Now she’s back on.  I know she is stressed about her financial state and how she is going to keep herself afloat even with Boss and my help.

These are all things my sister and I told her she needed to prepare for years ago. She’s finally realizing the reality of what has been bitched to her over the last 30 plus years.

We are all a little slow. I get it. There are things I wish I would have prepared for when I was younger but didn't. But time is ticking. No more pussyfooting around.
